The Mt. Vernon VFW Baseball Team started a fundraiser in summer 2011 at mid-season called “Hitting Cancer Where It Hurts.” They asked sponsors to commit to giving $1 per hit with the proceeds to be donated to help cancer. Many players received 10 or more sponsors resulting in raising $10 per hit. Monies raised would be used to purchase a brick at Mt. Vernon’s Heroes Field engraved with Mt. Vernon's VFW Baseball Team name. The remainder of the money would be given to Mitchell Heart & Sole.
At the State Class B Varsity VFW Baseball Tournament hosted in Mt. Vernon in August, the team invited three cancer survivors to help celebrate the tournament by throwing out the first pitch prior to each opening day’s game. Those cancer survivors were Don Hardie, James & Julie Davis, and Carol Johnson. Each of these cancer survivors were presented with a pink bat and the first pitched ball. The Mt. Vernon Baseball Team invited the other State Tournament participating teams to join them in the Cancer Awareness Tournament Theme, by including pink as part of their uniform, such as socks, wristbands, ribbon pinned to jersey, etc.
With team members from Mt. Vernon and Woonsocket, the baseball team chose the basketball games between the two schools on December 17 in Woonsocket to make the monetary presentation. The team presented Mary Nutter from the Mitchell Heart and Sole Cancer Walk with a check for $1,118 from their “Hitting Cancer Where It Hurts” fundraiser.
